If you believe you have taken part in eating a huge pizza, you can't compete with this.

New world record established for largest pizza ever

Pizza Hut sought to find a way to commemorate the return of their "big New Yorker" pizza, a cheese and pepperoni pizza with folding slices made to be eaten on-the-go in classic Manhattan style.

The plan was to travel to Los Angeles and work with YouTube sensation Airrack (aka Eric Decker).

To attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest pizza, they headed to the Los Angeles Convention Center, which would be large enough to host a 13,990-square-foot pie.

On Wednesday, they got to work on the enormous pizza. And on Friday, Pizza Hut said that it was really the largest pizza in the world, according to a Guinness representative who was present.

Late on Friday afternoon, Guinness emailed CNN Travel to confirm the record-breaking status.

How the pizza was made

Workers laid out layers of dough first, put tomato sauce on top, and then added toppings to finish the massive job. According to a Pizza Hut news release, when everything was arranged, it was cooked in pieces.

The record-breaking pizza required 13,653 pounds (6,193 kg) of dough, 4,948 pounds of pizza sauce, more than 8,800 pounds of mozzarella, and around 630,496 pieces of pepperoni.

Pizza Hut's CEO, David Graves, told Reuters that the 68,000 slices of pizza would be given to nearby food banks as soon as they were finished and recorded for Guinness.

A team of Italian cooks broke the previous Guinness record for the biggest pizza in the world in 2012. Ottavia was the name given to their 1,261.65 square meter gluten-free pizza.
